“You came over when it mattered.”

“Late.”

He hugged me then, carefully at first, as though I might break.

I held on until he stopped being careful.

Halcyon’s successor company terminated a consulting agreement with her firm.

Claire cut off contact.

Ben did not speak to Vanessa again.

The consequences were serious, but they were not theatrical.

There was no courtroom confession, no handcuffs under flashing lights.

Real accountability moved through letters, depositions, lost contracts, and doors that no longer opened.

The Navy issued me a formal commendation after the partial declassification.

I accepted it in a small ceremony with no press.

Ben and Claire attended.

So did General Hail.

Mason stood in the back row with a cane.

When the ceremony ended, he walked toward me slowly.

Neither of us spoke at first.

Then he held out his hand.

I ignored it and hugged him.

He laughed against my shoulder.

“Still disregarding procedure, Commander?”

“Only when necessary.”

That evening, my family gathered for dinner.

My place card had been written by hand.

Ben had added something beneath it in smaller letters.

My sister.

I kept the card.

Not because of the rank.
