INTO THE FIRE
The heat became unbearable as Clara reached the second floor.
Black smoke rolled across the ceiling, making her eyes water.
She pulled the collar of her uniform over her mouth and kept moving.
“Leo!”
No answer.
She reached his bedroom.
The door wouldn’t open.
It had warped from the heat.
Clara slammed her shoulder against it.
Nothing.
Again.
Pain shot through her arm.
Again.
The latch finally splintered.
Clara stumbled inside.
“Leo!”
A small cough came from beneath the canopy bed.
She dropped to her knees.
There he was.
The boy was curled tightly beneath the bed, trembling and struggling to breathe.
“Leo, it’s me.”
His frightened eyes found hers.
“Clara?”
“Yes. Come here.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“I’m scared.”
Clara didn’t hesitate.
She crawled beneath the bed and pulled him into her arms.
“You don’t have to be brave,” she whispered. “I’ll be brave for both of us.”
She tore off her apron and wrapped it around his face to protect him from the smoke.
Then she lifted him.
The hallway outside was already glowing orange.
A burning beam cracked overhead.
Clara looked toward the stairs.
Then back at Leo.
“We’re going home.”
She ran.
 THE HERO NO ONE EXPECTED
Clara reached the staircase just as a section of the ceiling collapsed behind her.
The explosion sent sparks through the hallway.
She tightened her grip around Leo and kept running.
One step.
Two.
Three.
Her lungs burned.
Her hands were beginning to blister.
But she didn’t stop.
Seconds later, she burst through the front doors.
A wave of cold autumn air hit her face.
She collapsed onto the lawn with Leo still in her arms.
The boy immediately began crying.
His father came running.
“Leo!”
Marcus Vance dropped to his knees and pulled his son against his chest.
“My God…”
Leo pointed toward Clara.
“She saved me.”
Marcus looked at the young maid.
Her uniform was covered in soot.
Her hands were burned.
Her hair was singed.
But she was alive.
Within minutes, emergency crews surrounded the estate.
News cameras arrived.
Guests who had barely noticed Clara before were suddenly calling her a hero.
By that evening, her picture was everywhere.

People praised her courage.
They called her an angel.
A savior.
A hero.
But while the world celebrated Clara…
Detective Miller was staring at something he had found inside the burned bedroom.
Something that would change the Vance family forever.
