My wife left me with five children and heartbroken ten years ago, but she showed up

Then the doorbell rang.

I got up to open the door. The instant I opened it, I was out of breath.

Natalie was standing on my porch dressed like she had been invited to someplace better.

Purpled shoes. A good coat. Hair combed with care to make it look natural. For a moment, stunned, my mind refused to relate to the woman of the  door with whom he had left five children and had never called to ask if any of them still had night terrors.

Natalie was standing on my porch dressed like she had been invited to someplace better.

Natalie pushed me away before she could speak and walked into the dining room. The children were paralyzed. Rosie backed up behind Owen without understanding why, simply sensing the surprise and seeking refuge in him.

Natalie broke down in tears immediately. Strong, openly and dramatically.

“I missed them all very much.”

No one moved.

Then he addressed the children and pronounced the phrase that made me boil the blood: “I had to leave because of your father. He didn’t earn enough to give us a decent life.”

I observed the confusion reflected in the faces of my young daughters.

Natalie continued to build her new version of the story right in front of them. He said he had only left “for a while.” He said he had sacrificed and changed.
