The first time Harrison Cole looked at me, he stared as though he had just seen a ghost.
Not a metaphorical ghost.
Not surprise.
Not gratitude.
A ghost.
For several seconds, the billionaire said absolutely nothing while six black SUVs idled behind him on the parade ground and nearly every soldier within sight pretended not to be watching.
I stood in uniform beneath the gray Virginia sky, wondering what mistake had somehow brought one of the wealthiest men in America to Fort Belvoir looking for a twenty-four-year-old Army specialist whose bank account contained exactly eighty-seven dollars until payday.
Then Harrison spoke.
“You donated blood at St. Jude Medical Center three weeks ago.”
“Yes, sir.”
“You saved my life.”
I relaxed slightly.
So that was it.
He had come to thank me.
At least, that was what I thought.
