The doctor noticed.
“You’re safe in here,” he whispered.
That was when something inside me finally broke.
I lowered my eyes and answered so quietly that he had to lean closer.
“Yes.”
His face changed immediately.
“How long?”
Tears filled my eyes.
“Forty-nine years.”
The doctor went completely still.😳
Then he looked down at the results on his desk, back at me, and asked one final question.
And when I answered, he reached for the phone.
That was the moment I realized the secret I had protected for nearly half a century was about to destroy everything.😱💔

The doctor’s hand stopped halfway toward the phone.
Before he dialed, he looked at me again.
“What exactly has your husband been forcing you to do?”
I swallowed.
For forty-nine years, I had trained myself not to answer questions like that.
Then I whispered, “Take pills.”
The doctor’s expression tightened.
“What pills?”
“I don’t know.”
He stared at me.
“You don’t know?”
I shook my head.
“Richard gives them to me every night. He says they’re for my nerves.”
“How long has this been happening?”
I looked down at my trembling hands.
“Since the first year of our marriage.”
The room became painfully quiet.
The doctor leaned forward.
“Were they prescribed to you?”
“I thought so.”
“You thought so?”
My throat tightened.
Richard had always handled everything.
Appointments.
Prescriptions.
Bank accounts.
Even conversations with doctors.
Whenever I asked why I needed the tablets, he would smile and say, “You know how emotional you get. This keeps you well.”
For decades, I believed him.
Or perhaps I had simply learned that questioning him created problems.
The doctor asked what the pills looked like.
I described them as best I could.
Sometimes white.
Sometimes pale blue.
They had changed over the years.

Richard kept them in a small plastic container beside his bed and handed them to me with water every evening.
I had never seen the original packaging.
The doctor went completely still.
