The counter was clean.

The cabinet still held the old corded phone.

 

I touched the cabinet door and left it exactly where it was.

 

Some things do not need to be replaced.

 

Some things remind you what happened.

 

The blue plate was gone by then.

 

It had become part of the evidence file.

 

But the space where it used to sit was still there.

 

And every time I looked at that empty spot, I remembered the same thing.

 

Daniel believed removing one object would erase the truth.

 

He was wrong because the truth was already somewhere else.
