Cassidy mentioned she volunteered at a community farmers market that ran a kids’ area with a small stage for local musicians, and she offered to bring Toby along for a Saturday visit while I told him she was an old family friend, just to see him, just once, before everything else came out.
“I’ll only have him a couple hours,” she said. “I promise I’ll bring him back before anything gets complicated.”
That Saturday, Toby had his drawing for “Grandpa” still sitting in his lap when I parked outside the market instead of the rehab facility.

At the market, Cassidy introduced him to the vendors and let him pick out a strawberry. Later, near the little stage, a song started that Cassidy apparently used to sing to soothe herself as a teenager, and something about the moment overwhelmed her without warning. Toby, seeing her cry, wrapped both arms around her neck without hesitation.
“Don’t be sad,” he told her. “I’m here.”
She held him close as she cried into his shoulder, and that was the exact moment Desmond happened to
