It was 9:52 when Renee finally unlocked the door.
Toby walked in holding the woman’s hand. Up close she looked younger than in the photo, maybe early thirties, her eyes red and swollen from crying.
Toby let go of her hand the moment he saw me.
“Dad, please don’t be mad at Mom.”
I looked at Renee. “What exactly have you told him?”
“Mark,” the woman said quietly, “I’m sorry you had to find out this way.”
She looked down at the floor.
I held the door open. “I think you should go.”
She glanced at Renee, and something passed between them silently that made my grip on the door tighten.
Renee caught my arm before I could say anything else. “Before you do that, you need to hear something that started twenty-six years ago.”
“Please, Mark.”
