judgment.
The doubts.
All I saw was the woman who had changed my life.
After the vows, after the music, after everyone finally left us alone, I thought the hardest part was over.
I was wrong.
Because the truth had been waiting for that moment.
Our wedding night.
The night my entire life changed.
The bedroom was enormous.
Bigger than my entire apartment.
A fireplace burned softly.
The curtains moved slightly from the night breeze.
Eleanor closed the door behind us.
Then she stood there silently.
I noticed her hands were shaking.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
She nodded.
But she wasn’t convincing.
She walked toward a table and placed two things on it.
A thick envelope.
And a set of keys.
“What is this?”
She looked at me.
“Your wedding gift.”
I opened the envelope slightly.
My eyes widened.
Inside were documents and a bank statement.
One million dollars.
