Grandpa hid my daughter’s hands under the blanket every time I came in — one day I opened the door without knocking and saw something I didn’t expect.

My father’s eyes filled with tears.

I knelt in front of his wheelchair and squeezed his hand.

Two days later, I went to school with them.

When Liam walked into the classroom, all the children raised their hands. Emily stood in front of them and demonstrated the signs her grandfather had taught her.

The entire class signed:

“Happy birthday, Liam! We’re glad you’re here with us.”

At first, the boy stood completely still. Then a huge smile spread across his face, and he ran straight to Emily.

 

That evening, my daughter fell asleep in her grandfather’s arms again. This time, when I entered the room, Dad didn’t hide her hands.
