“You don’t owe him anything tonight,” she whispered.
She was right.
But fate apparently wasn’t finished.

PART SIX — “ARE THOSE MY KIDS?”
I saw him coming.
My first thought was absurdly practical.
I wondered whether my mascara had smudged.
Twelve years of abandonment, and somehow part of my brain was worried about mascara.
“Allison.”
His voice sounded almost exactly the same.
I hated that.
I looked at him.
“Adam.”
Behind him stood the woman and the girl.
The woman looked confused.
Adam looked toward the triplets.
They had just reached me.
Andy was carrying his saxophone case.
Amara had her artwork tucked under one arm.
