The doorbell only rang once. Quick. Sharp. The kind of ring that belongs to someone who doesn’t want to be seen waiting.

I almost didn’t answer it. It was just past six in the morning, I was still in my robe, my hair half-pinned, and my coffee had already gone lukewarm in my hand. But something about that single ring pulled me out of the kitchen and down the hall.

 

I opened the door and forgot how to breathe.
