Until I saw Daniel. He was standing beside Emily and whispered something into her ear.
Emily looked at me for a moment. Then she nodded. Daniel left the room first.
About ten seconds later, Emily followed him.
My heart began pounding. I waited. One minute. Two. Three. They didn’t come back.
By the fifth minute, I was already climbing the stairs to the second floor.
It was almost silent up there.
The guest room door at the end of the hallway was closed. I walked toward it. Then I heard voices from inside. Daniel’s voice.
“Okay, now stand up straight.”
Then Emily’s.
“Like this?”
“Yes. Now turn around.”
I froze. Then I heard Daniel say something that made my stomach drop.
