I already knew what she meant.
“Diego?”
She nodded.
“99.99 percent.”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
So the vasectomy had not yet resulted in confirmed sterility—or had failed to provide the certainty Diego assumed.
Either way, his absolute confidence had destroyed everything.
Paula looked down.
“He accused me until the result arrived.”
“I know what that feels like.”
She nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
I studied her.
“For what?”
“For all of it.”
She swallowed.
“I knew he was married before you told him you were pregnant.”
That hurt.
But it no longer shattered me.
“I wanted to believe his marriage was practically over. Then when you became pregnant, believing you cheated made everything easier for me.”
“At my expense.”
“Yes.”
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“I was cruel.”
I appreciated that she didn’t ask me to forgive her.
So I simply said:
“Take care of your son.”
She nodded.
