Chapter 1 — What Are the Tiny Mites Around the Eyelashes?
A close-up image showing numerous tiny organisms crawling around the eyelashes can look frightening. Viral posts often pair images like this with captions suggesting that something as ordinary as sleeping with a pet, sleeping with makeup on, or poor hygiene can cause a severe infestation.
The reality is more nuanced.

The organisms depicted in the image resemble Demodex mites, microscopic mites that commonly live in human hair follicles, including around the eyelashes. Their presence alone does not mean that someone has an infestation or that their sleeping habits caused the problem. In many people, Demodex exists without producing noticeable symptoms.
