I took this photo on the evening of my parents’ 53rd wedding anniversary.

My mother, Linda, is 76, and my father, Robert, is 80.

Looking at this picture, you would probably think they were simply a happy elderly couple. Mom was wearing her favorite black floral blouse, and Dad had on a light blue shirt. They spent the entire evening side by side, smiling at the guests and talking about their younger years.

But just a few minutes after this photo was taken, everything changed.

Dad was the one who asked me to take it.

“Sarah, grab your phone. Take a nice picture of us.”
