I took this photo on the evening of my parents’ 59th wedding anniversary.

My mother, Margaret, is 81, and my father, William, is 84. If you had seen them that evening, you probably would have thought they were the happiest elderly couple in the world.

Mom was wearing her favorite yellow dress, and Dad followed her around all evening. At one point, he walked up behind her, wrapped his arms around her, and said:

“Emily, take a picture of us. But make it a good one. This one is important.”

I laughed.

“Dad, you two already have hundreds of pictures.”

He didn’t laugh.

He only held my mother tighter and quietly replied:

“This one is different.”
