Benji ran ahead in messy circles, waiting for all of us to catch up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"postComponents_blockquote__q4kp0 postComponents_alternative-view__bRnNf\">\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">\u201cShe wanted to go with all of you too, didn\u2019t she?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"adv\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">I watched my daughter\u2019s friends throw a stick for the dog she had searched for until her last day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d I said. All four turned. \u201cI blamed you because I couldn\u2019t bear where else the pain belonged. That wasn\u2019t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">The dark-haired boy shook his head. \u201cYou lost your daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">\u201cAnd you lost your friend,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">The blond girl hugged me first, awkward and sudden and completely sincere. The others followed until I stood there holding the kids I had once sent away, all of us crying for the same girl.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">Benji barked once into the wind and ran back, tail going wild. I laughed. The first real laugh since the funeral.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"postComponents_blockquote__q4kp0 postComponents_alternative-view__bRnNf\">\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">\u201cI blamed you because I couldn\u2019t bear where else the pain belonged.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"adv\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">I still miss my daughter in ways that language does not help. Benji settles outside my bedroom door at night. Her friends come by sometimes for dinner, to walk him, or just because grief feels lighter when shared by people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">They tell me stories. How Angie made them drive back to return a stray shopping cart because somebody had to. How she spent 40 minutes coaxing a scared kitten from under a car. How she talked about me all the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">That last one still breaks me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"postComponents_paragraph__0OLfg\">Angie did not get to come back.
