I left my three-year-old son in the care of his seventeen-year-old brother while I worked an exhausting double shift at the hospital. I thought my boys were safe at home. Then my phone rang, and a police officer’s words made my blood run cold.
“Ma’am, you need to come home immediately. Something has happened involving your older son.”
My heart nearly stopped.
“Please tell me my children are okay!” I begged.
“They’re safe,” he assured me. “But there’s something you need to hear in person.”
I rushed home, my mind drowning in terrifying possibilities. When I arrived, an officer stood outside holding my little Andrew, fast asleep in his arms. But Logan was nowhere to be seen.
“Where’s my son?” I cried.
The officer looked at me solemnly.
“Mrs. Carter, we need to talk about Logan.”
My legs trembled. Then he added, “Please don’t be afraid. What your son did today is far more extraordinary than you could imagine.”
