I left my three-year-old son in the care of his seventeen-year-old brother while I worked an exhausting double shift at the hospital. I thought my boys were safe at home. Then my phone rang, and a police officer’s words made my blood run cold.

My name is Rachel. I’m forty-one, and two years ago, I lost my beloved husband, Daniel, without warning. Since then, I’ve struggled to raise our two boys alone, working endless hospital shifts to keep a roof over our heads.

Logan, just seventeen, has carried more responsibility than any teenager should. He helps care for Andrew, prepares his meals, and sacrifices his free time so I can provide for our family. Yet behind his quiet smile, I knew he was hurting. Since losing his father, he’d grown distant, abandoned soccer, and often wandered alone.

I worried constantly that grief was pulling him away from me.

That Thursday morning, I kissed both boys goodbye. Andrew wore his dinosaur pajamas, while Logan prepared breakfast.

“Take care of your little brother,” I said.

“Don’t worry, Mom. We’ve got this,” he answered with a reassuring smile.

Hours later, Officer Benny Reyes called me home.
