Where is it written?
That was healthy.
Authority should survive questions.
If it cannot, it is probably not authority.
Brenda’s criminal case eventually went to trial.
Darren entered a plea and agreed to testify.
By then he used a wheelchair.
I saw him for the first time since the porch when he entered the courtroom.
The experience was difficult.
He looked older.
Thinner.
His legs rested motionless.
For a moment, anger disappeared.
All I saw was the cost.
Then testimony began.
Darren described how Brenda had recruited him into more aggressive enforcement.
“She said residents had gotten too comfortable saying no.”
The prosecutor asked, “What did she mean?”
“She said rules don’t work if people think compliance is optional.”
“Did she specifically discuss Mr. Vance?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
“That he was undermining her.”
“By doing what?”
“Refusing the key.”
“Anything else?”
“Sending legal letters. Asking for votes. Asking for meeting minutes.”
