“He just left us here,” she sobbed. “Our babies are only six days old.”
My heart sank. I couldn’t imagine how someone could leave a mother alone with two newborns, especially when she needed help the most.
She apologized repeatedly for troubling me, but I reassured her that she had nothing to apologize for. Sometimes, people don’t need grand gestures. They simply need someone who refuses to walk away.
When we arrived, her sister rushed to the door in slippers and immediately helped carry the babies inside. The young mother turned to me, tears shining in her eyes.
“Thank you. I honestly didn’t know what else to do.”
I went home, believing I had simply done what any decent person would do.
But two days later, my department chief summoned me to his office. His expression made my stomach tighten.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” he demanded.
