Sarah turned toward me, terrified.
“Mom, what’s happening to you?”
I tried to smile.
“I wasn’t feeling very well. It was probably just exhaustion.”
Robert interrupted sharply.
“No, Margaret. You’ve been having chest pains for three weeks. You struggle to breathe at night. And you keep telling me you’re just tired.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
“How do you know that?”
“Because I’m your husband. And I’ve been sleeping beside you for thirty-two years.”
Silence filled the room.
Sarah picked up Lily.
“Mom, we’re going to the doctor today.”
I tried to protest, but for the first time in years, Robert approached me, took my hand, and spoke softly.
“Please, just this once, don’t argue.”
At the hospital, the doctor examined me thoroughly.
They measured my blood pressure, checked my heart, and ran blood tests.
Fortunately, they found no signs of a heart attack at that moment.
