At 69, I went on vacation alone and fell in love with a 72-year-old man. For seven days I felt like the happiest woman in the world. But our last night I heard a woman say, “You can’t fool her anymore. He’s coming home tomorrow and you still don’t know how you’re going to get rid of her.”

I thought maybe I was going to propose to continue our relationship after the holidays.

But, during dinner, his phone rang.

David’s expression changed immediately.

“I’m sorry. I need to go out for a few minutes.

He walked away.

It was fifteen minutes.

I started worrying.

Finally, I decided to go get it.

In the courtyard behind the restaurant, I heard his voice.

David was talking to a woman.

“Have you told him everything yet?” she asked.

“No.

David, he returns to the United States tomorrow. You can’t keep fooling her like this!

Me quedé paralizada.

Entonces David dijo:

—Si Mary descubre la verdad, jamás me perdonará.
Los ojos se me llenaron de lágrimas.
