I looked at him.
“You helped him?”
“For the final two letters, he couldn’t write anymore. He dictated them to me.”
The doctor paused.
“But there’s something else.”
I was already afraid of that sentence.
“What?”
He glanced at his watch.
“Jake asked me to take you to another floor of the hospital, if you were willing.”
“Why?”
“Because the donation process has begun. And there is a family Jake knew about before he died.”
I stared at him.
“How could he have known?”
Dr. Daniel explained that several weeks earlier, Jake had met a man named Peter at the hospital.
Peter was the father of two children and had been waiting for the possibility of a transplant for months.
They were often treated on the same floor.
One day, Jake noticed Peter’s young son sitting outside his father’s room for hours, doing his homework.
That evening, Jake asked the doctor whether there was any lawful and medically appropriate possibility that, after his death, his donation could help that family.
