But two months later, after Lily had been born, I visited Dr. Daniel again.
Lily was sleeping in my arms.
She had Jake’s eyes.
The doctor looked at her and smiled for a long moment.
“She looks so much like her father.”
For the first time, those words didn’t destroy me.
I smiled.
Then I asked the question I had been carrying with me for weeks.
“Was the donation successful?”
Dr. Daniel was quiet for several seconds.
Then he nodded.
“He helped several people.”
I didn’t ask for names.
I didn’t want addresses or photographs.
For me, it was enough to know that somewhere, someone had been able to return home to their family.
That evening, I opened Jake’s first letter to Lily.
It had been written for the day she was born.
At the end was one sentence that now sits inside a small frame in our living room.
