As I signed the final paperwork, my tears fell onto the pages.
I kept repeating only one thing in my mind.
This was what Jake wanted.
When I finally left his room and started walking toward the elevator, I heard hurried footsteps behind me.
“Sarah! Wait!”
It was Dr. Daniel.
His face was pale.
One of his hands was hidden behind his back.
“Jake gave me this three weeks ago,” he said, slightly out of breath. “And he made me promise that you wouldn’t see it while he was still alive.”
I froze.
“What is it?”
The doctor stared at me silently for several seconds before saying something that made me forget how to breathe.
“Sarah… before I give this to you, you need to know that during his final weeks, Jake wasn’t only asking me questions about donating his organs.”
The rest of the story is in the comments

I stared at the hand the doctor was still holding behind his back.
