Chapter 1: My Son and I Secretly Got on My h007

And now, the heavy forward boarding door had thumped shut with an airtight, pneumatic seal: shhh-clank.

The overhead chime sounded: ding-dong.

The public address speakers crackled to life, and Tyler’s rich, confident baritone filled the cabin:

*“Good morning, folks, from the flight deck.

This is Captain Tyler Mercer welcoming you aboard flight four-eighty-two with non-stop service to Chicago.

Weather in the Windy City is currently thirty-eight degrees with clear visibility along the lakefront.

Flight time this morning will be a very brisk one hour and thirty-eight minutes.

Our flight attendants are in the aisles to ensure your comfort, and we should have you at the gate well ahead of schedule.”*

Mason’s entire body gave a violent, joyful shiver.

He grabbed the sleeve of my wool sweater with both hands, his face turning up toward mine in absolute, unadulterated ecstasy:

“Mom!” he whispered, his voice vibrating with pride: “That’s him!

That’s Dad!

He sounds so loud!”

I pulled out my phone, angling the camera toward Mason’s beaming face, my eyes misting with that warm, aching tenderness that mothers carry when their children’s dreams align with the world.

I imagined showing Tyler the video in the terminal at O’Hare, watching his aristocratic composure dissolve into laughter as he realized his son had been riding behind him the entire time.

Then Tyler’s voice paused over the speakers.

A three-second gap of open-microphone carrier static hummed through the speakers: shhhhh.

When Tyler spoke again, the relaxed, professional cadence of an airline captain had vanished.

His voice was lower, intimate, thick with an intense, breathless gravity that made several business travelers in the rows ahead of us pause with their tablets in hand:

“Actually, folks… before the ground crew pushes us back from gate Bravo-Fourteen, I need to say something a little different today.”
