Chapter 1: My Son and I Secretly Got on My h007

Or perhaps Tyler had caught a glimpse of Mason’s bright red sneakers reflecting in the glass boarding bridge.

This was Tyler turning the tables on our surprise, using his captain’s microphone to welcome his seven-year-old son to the flight deck.

I began to unbuckle my seatbelt, preparing to stand in the aisle, my hand reaching down to lift Mason’s small frame so the passengers around us could witness the reveal.

Then Tyler’s voice delivered the next sentence.

“Seated up in First Class, in seat Two-B… is a woman named Vanessa Sterling.”

My hands locked on the metal buckle of my seatbelt.

The air in row twenty-four ceased to exist.

“Vanessa,” Tyler’s voice echoed through the cabin, trembling with an emotional tenderness he had not directed toward me in six years:

*“From the moment we reconnected six months ago, you reminded me that life is too short to remain trapped in an ordinary, suffocating routine.

You’ve given up your own career in Zurich to build a new life with me.

And today, as we begin this journey toward our permanent home in Switzerland…

I want everyone on this aircraft to know that I am the luckiest man in the sky.”*

A collective, romantic “Awwww” rippled through the front rows of the cabin.

Several passengers clapped.

A flight attendant near row four cheered softly.

And over the public address system came the sound of Tyler’s deep, breathless laugh:

“Vanessa… will you marry me?”

The forward cabin erupted into thunderous, enthusiastic applause.

Passengers craned their necks to catch a glimpse of seat 2B.

Laughter, whistles, and congratulations rolled down the center aisle like a tidal wave of festive celebration.

Beside me in seat 24B, Mason did not clap.

He did not smile.

The sheet of construction paper—the drawing of BEST PILOT EVER with the crooked green letters and the smiling stick figures—slipped from his paralyzed little fingers.
