Then he moved the phone closer to Emily’s face.
That was enough.
I pushed the door open so violently that it struck the wall.
“RICHARD! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
He spun around, startled.
His phone nearly slipped from his hand.
I rushed toward the bed.
Emily was lying completely still beneath her sheet.
“Emily! Sweetheart!”
I touched her shoulder, terrified.
She stirred and slowly opened her eyes.
“Mommy? What’s wrong?”
Relief flooded through me, followed immediately by anger.
I turned toward Richard.
“Why have you been coming into her room every night? And what were you doing with that phone?”
He stared at me, pale and shaken.
Then he quietly held out his phone.

“Susan, please look.”
I wanted to shout at him again.
But something on the screen caught my attention.
It wasn’t a photograph.
It was an audio recording.
Richard pressed play.
At first, I heard only the gentle sound of Emily breathing in her sleep.
