Every Night, When I Went to Work, I Left My 5-Year-Old Son With My 73-Year-Old Father. A Few Weeks Later, My Boy Started Complaining of Severe Lower Back Pain. When I Asked What Had Happened, He Answered Fearfully, “Mommy, Grandpa Told Me Not to Tell You What We Do at Night.”

each month.

And all that time, my father had quietly been trying to give me back the house where I’d spent the happiest days of my childhood.

“But why keep it a secret?” I asked through my tears.

“Because I wanted your mother’s dream to come true on your birthday.”

He pointed toward the miniature wooden house.

“And this little version was Ben’s idea. He said that before we gave you the keys to the real house, we should give you the small one.”

My son came closer.

“Mommy, Grandpa said there’s a big yard at that house. Can I have a dog there?”

I laughed through my tears.

But then my expression grew serious.

“Ben, you know you can always tell me anything, don’t you? Even if someone asks you to keep it a secret.”

He nodded.

“Yes, Mommy. I just didn’t want to ruin the surprise.”

My father

approached us.

“I was wrong, Sarah. I never should have asked a child to keep something from his mother. Especially when there was a problem with his health.”

I squeezed his hand.

“Dad, I love you. But you should have told me about Ben’s pain the very first day.”

He agreed without trying to defend himself.

That night, I took my son home.

The following morning, we returned to the doctor. After a thorough examination and the necessary tests, the doctor explained that Ben’s pain was related to muscle strain. He recommended rest, better sitting posture, and temporarily avoiding activities that required sitting in the same position for long periods.

A few weeks later, Ben was feeling much better.

And on my birthday, the three of us went to the house I’d dreamed about for so many years.

My father slowly opened the gate.

Ben ran into the yard.
