At first, the little terrier growled.
Then hunger won.
She crept forward, trembling, and began to eat.
That gave the veterinarian enough time to cut the yellow rope.
The moment it fell away, the dog did not run.
She went straight to the towel.
Straight to her puppies.
She curled her body around them and began licking each one carefully.
The veterinarian examined the family and discovered that the mother was dehydrated and underweight, but otherwise stable.
The puppies were alive.
All three.
What happened next surprised me even more.
Security footage from the supermarket showed that the dog had not been abandoned there days earlier.
A man had tied her to the bicycle rack that very morning.
He had left the towel and puppies behind her, then simply walked away.
The rescue later named her Hope.

All three puppies survived.
And several weeks later, after endless conversations with myself—and with my eighty-two-year-old mother—I adopted Hope.
