My executive assistant, **Vivian Vance**, forty-eight years old, dressed in a sharp charcoal wool pantsuit, was sitting at her desk reviewing contract bids when the elevator doors parted with a soft, pneumatic hiss:

*DING.*

Vivian looked up, her pen freezing over her tablet, her eyes widening in immediate alarm as she saw my grease-stained flannel shirt, my steel-toed boots, and my sixteen-year-old daughter wrapped in an oversized coat:

“Mr. Whitaker?!” Vivian gasped, rising to her feet:

“What happened to you? Why are you here on Christmas Eve? Is Sophie alright?”

“Unlock the primary boardroom, Vivian,” I commanded, my voice dropping sixty decibels of mountain quarry explosive:

“Set Sophie up in my corner office with a heated blanket, order hot chocolate from the hotel downstairs, and call our corporate executive committee.”

Vivian didn’t ask a single civilian question. A veteran of twelve years in corporate logistics, she recognized the terrifying, lethal stillness in my eyes:

“Who do you need on the line, sir?”

“Three people,” I said, walking down the carpeted executive corridor:

“**Marcus Cooper**, Chief Legal Counsel. **Elena Sterling**, Senior Vice President of Human Resources. And **Thomas Bennett**, Chief Financial Officer.”

“Get them on an encrypted video link within fifteen minutes.”

I settled Sophie into the leather sofa in my private office, turned on the gas fireplace, and kissed her forehead:

“Rest, Sophie. You are safe now. Nobody is ever going to speak to you like that again.”

“Dad… what are you going to do?” Sophie whispered, her eyes wide as she looked around the massive, marble-lined executive suite—a room she had visited only twice before in her life.

“I’m going to enforce company policy, sweetheart,” I replied softly:

“No more exceptions.”

I walked into the adjoining twenty-seat boardroom, pulled out my encrypted enterprise laptop, and connected the terminal to the central corporate database.
