“I agreed to nothing,” I replied.
Daniel tried to interrupt, but I raised my hand.
“For once in your life, let me finish speaking.”
Twenty minutes later, two police officers arrived.
Daniel suddenly changed his tone.
He became the concerned, loving son I hadn’t seen in years.
“Officers, my father has been confused lately. I’m simply trying to arrange proper care for him.”
One officer turned toward me.
“Sir, do you feel safe living here?”
“Absolutely.”
“Are you able to manage your own daily needs?”
“Yes. And I’d like to show you something.”
I opened my phone.
The previous afternoon, after Daniel started demanding my money, I had activated the voice recorder.
I hadn’t planned to use it against him. I simply wanted to remember exactly what he had said, because I could barely believe it.
Now his voice filled the living room.
“If you don’t leave me your entire fortune, I’ll put you in a nursing home and make sure you never see your grandchildren again.”
