“Please.”
For the first time in his life, my son left my house without arguing.
That afternoon, I called my lawyer.
We discussed protecting my finances, reviewing my estate plans, and making sure nobody could make decisions about my property without proper authorization.
I also contacted my bank and asked them to flag any unusual requests involving my accounts.
But the hardest call was to my daughter-in-law, Susan.
I told her what had happened.
At first, she didn’t believe me.
Then I played the recording.
She began crying.
“Robert, he told me you wanted to move into a nursing home. He said you were planning to sell the house.”
Those words hurt more than I expected.
My own son had been lying to everyone.
Susan promised that whatever happened between Daniel and me, she would never keep my grandchildren away.
That Sunday, my two grandchildren came to visit.
My granddaughter Emily, who is twelve, ran into my arms.
