I whispered,
“But they already did.”
“I know.”
He paused.
“And that is why I’m here.”
That afternoon, we drove back to the mansion.
I almost asked him to turn around three times.
When we reached the gates, Thomas’s daughter came outside.
Her face changed when she saw me step out of the car with the attorney.
“What is she doing here?”
The attorney answered calmly.
“Mrs. Margaret Hayes is returning to her home.”
Her brother laughed.
“Our home.”
The attorney opened his folder.
“No. Your father transferred ownership before his death.”
Silence.
Thomas’s daughter stared at me.
Then at the papers.
Then back at me.
“You manipulated him.”
I felt something inside me break.
But for the first time since Thomas died, I did not lower my eyes.
“I loved your father before he had anything worth taking.”
She said nothing.
The attorney handed them copies of Thomas’s instructions.
