I Took My 7-Year-Old Son, Who Has Down Syndrome and Was Fighting Leukemia, to See the Ocean Because It Was His Biggest — and Possibly LAST — Wish… But That Evening, the Hotel Manager Knocked on Our Door and Said, “There’s Something About This Trip You Don’t Know”

“Why didn’t you come see me?”

Mark lowered his head.

“Because I was a coward.”

Liam stared at him.

“I was scared in the hospital.”

“I know.”

“But Mommy stayed.”

Mark’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“And Grandpa stayed.”

“Yes.”

“So you should’ve stayed too.”

Mark’s face crumbled.

“You’re right.”

Liam opened the blue box and took out a small silver music box.

“Did you keep this?”

“Every day.”

Liam listened to the little melody.

Then he said,

“We’re going back to the ocean tomorrow.”

Mark nodded.

“You can come.”

Mark looked stunned.

But Liam added,

“You can’t run away again.”

Mark wiped his eyes.

“I won’t.”

The next morning, the three of us went to the beach.

I hadn’t forgiven Mark.

But that day wasn’t about me.

It was about Liam.

He built a sandcastle while Mark sat beside him.
