In this photo, my parents were celebrating 53 years of marriage. My mother was smiling, suspecting nothing. But just minutes after I took the picture, my father pulled me aside and said, “Tomorrow, your mother is going to learn something I’ve hidden from her for our entire marriage…”

They had grown up in the same small town. Their families were close. Their fathers worked together, and everyone had always assumed that Robert and Carol would eventually become husband and wife.

But Dad didn’t love Carol.

By then, he had already met my mother.

Linda.

The only problem was that no one knew about them.

Dad was afraid to go against his family. Carol’s family was already talking about an engagement, and my grandfather kept reminding Dad how important the connection between the two families was.

Then one day, Carol simply disappeared.

Her parents said she had moved to another state.

No one explained why.

Carol never came back.

Dad married Mom.

Decades passed.

Until seven months ago.

“She found me,” Dad said.

Mom stared at him, still confused.

“After more than fifty years?”

“Yes.”

It turned out that Carol had spent a long time wondering whether she should finally reveal what had really happened.
