Carol knew the answer.
No.
The doorbell rang for the third time.
Dad finally went to open it.
Standing on the porch was a woman around seventy-eight years old.
She was holding a small wooden box.
She looked at Mom.
“Linda?”
Mom slowly walked toward the door.
“Carol.”
For several seconds, the two women simply stared at each other.
I expected anger.
Maybe accusations.
Instead, Mom suddenly wrapped her arms around Carol.
Carol began to cry.
“I’m sorry I came so late.”
“You don’t owe me anything,” Mom said.
Then we all sat down in the living room.
Carol opened the wooden box.
Inside were old photographs, several postcards, and letters that had been kept for more than half a century.
One of them had been written by Mom’s father just days before my parents’ wedding.
Mom began to read.
After only a few lines, her hands started to shake.
