“LOOK AT YOU! I’M ASHAMED THAT YOU’RE MY WIFE!” my husband said when he saw me holding our baby, my hair a mess. Five minutes later, my mother-in-law arrived. My husband laughed and said, “Mom, teach her a lesson!” But what my mother-in-law did next made my husband BEG his own mother to stop…

“Emily, when was the last time you slept through the night?”

“I honestly don’t remember.”

“And when did you last have a proper breakfast without rushing?”

I looked down.

“Probably before Sophie was born.”

Margaret faced her son.

“Did you hear that? Your wife can’t remember the last time she rested, and all you noticed was her hair.”

Mike sighed.

“Mom, every woman raises children. You’re making this dramatic.”

Margaret suddenly slammed her palm against the table.

“YOUR FATHER SAID EXACTLY THE SAME THING!”

The room went silent.

I had known Margaret for ten years, but she had never spoken openly about the early years of her marriage.

Mike’s father had died fifteen years earlier. Whenever Margaret mentioned him, she spoke respectfully.

But now her hands were trembling.

“When you were four months old, Mike, I was twenty-six. I spent my nights feeding you, my mornings cleaning, and my afternoons trying desperately to keep our house together.”
