Dad lowered his head.
“Emily told me some girls at school were making fun of her appearance. I told her she was beautiful just as she was and should never feel ashamed of her body.”
I covered my face.
Then I remembered Mrs. Wilson.
“The curtains? The little girl’s voice?”
Dad looked puzzled.
“We kept the curtains closed so nobody would see the dress through the window. Emily sometimes came here after school with your permission, remember? She’d sit in the bedroom and talk about the design while Linda and I worked.”
He paused.
“Sometimes Linda brought her granddaughter along. The girls loved talking about the colors and decorations.”
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The mysterious voices.
The closed curtains.
The pink sweater, which Linda had borrowed to make Emily a matching accessory for my birthday.
Every suspicious detail had a harmless explanation.
But I still looked at my father seriously.
