Hope.
That evening, I sang with my old choir.
My voice trembled at first, but soon the familiar melodies filled the room.
Jake watched from the back, smiling through his tears.
Later, I hugged him tightly.
“Promise me you’ll never deceive me like that again.”
“I promise, Mom.”
“And Jake?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you for caring enough to see that I needed help.”
Today, Linda is one of my closest friends. We sing together every week, and Emily often visits with her children.
Jake has a real girlfriend now, a sweet young woman his own age named Sarah.
And although I still remind him how foolish his little scheme was, I understand what he was desperately trying to do.
Last week, I visited David’s grave.
For the first time in twelve years, I didn’t arrive feeling only sadness.
I placed fresh flowers beside his headstone and whispered:
“David, I’m happy again. And now I know that’s exactly what you would have wanted.”
