“My name is Margaret. I’m your first husband’s mother. Mike’s mother.”
I froze.
“That’s impossible.”
Mike had always told me that his mother died when he was sixteen.
He even had a photograph of her grave.
“My husband grew up without parents,” I whispered.
The woman nodded.
“I know. That’s what he told people. And he had his reasons.”
Robert stepped toward me.
“Sarah, please sit down.”
“No! I want to know what’s going on!”
Margaret reached into her handbag, took out an old photograph, and handed it to me.
It showed a young Mike, about twenty years old. The same woman stood beside him, and behind them was a little blue house.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
With Mom, 1998.
I immediately remembered the stories Mike had told me.
He had claimed that by 1998, he had already been living on his own for three years.
