I set the folded schedule on the counter.
“What else did you bring?”
Ashley blinked.
“What?”
“You said you finally made this fair. Usually when people say that, they have more than one paper.”
Darren’s jaw shifted.
Ashley looked at him, quick and sharp.
There it was.
The second note.
She reached into the tote and pulled out another sheet. This one was titled Summer checkout responsibilities. It had boxes beside each task.
Trash to chute.
Laundry started.
Balcony wiped.
Sand checked under beds.
Refrigerator emptied.
Beach chairs rinsed.
Gate code confirmed with approved guests only.
Approved guests only.
I read that line twice.
Something inside me went very still.
“Who approved them?” I asked.
Ashley waved one hand.
“We did. Darren and I. It just means we don’t want random people.”
“In my condo.”
She took a sip of iced coffee.
“Loretta, you keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
“It’s also family property in the practical sense.”
Darren whispered, “Ash.”
