We sat in silence for a long time.
Then he said something that would stay in my heart forever.
“Emily, I never tried to replace my brother. I simply made a promise that his daughter would never feel alone.”
I began to cry.
“Did he know about me?”
Robert smiled through his tears.
“He talked about you all the time. Even before you were born, he called you Emily. He’s the one who chose your name.”
I turned toward the ocean.
For the first time, I felt that there had been a man I had never known, but who had truly been waiting for me to be born.
“I wish I could have known him,” I whispered.
“I wish you could have known him, too.”
When we returned home, my mother was waiting by the door, her eyes filled with tears.
That night, the three of us sat together and talked until dawn. I listened to stories about my parents’ younger years, memories of David, and all the little details they had hidden from me for so many years.
