But that “one day” never came.
Last Friday, my father unexpectedly suggested that the two of us go to the beach.
“Emily, I want to spend an entire day with just you. Without your mother.”
I was surprised. My parents never made separate plans with me.
During the drive, my father was unusually quiet. Several times, I noticed him looking through the rearview mirror at the cars behind us.
“Dad, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing, sweetheart. I just want you to remember this day.”
We arrived at the beach shortly before sunset.
My father stood near the water and stared at the waves for a long time. His eyes were moist.
“You know, Emily, twenty-three years ago, I made myself a promise that one day I would bring you here.”
“Why here?”
He smiled.
“Because this is where everything began.”
I didn’t understand, but I didn’t ask.
Then my father put his arm around me, took my phone, and snapped a picture of us.
