“We know what you’ve done. When you get home, we need to have a serious conversation.”
My husband read it and laughed.
“They’ll be angry for a few days, then forget about it. We’re their parents, after all.”
I wanted to believe him.
But when we returned on the tenth day, Daniel, Sarah, and our two grandchildren were waiting near the front gate.
Nobody smiled.
Daniel didn’t even approach us for a hug.
Instead, he looked at his father and spoke quietly.
“Dad, before you come inside, I need both of you to listen carefully. We’ve already made our decision.”
George tried to joke.
“What is this? Are you putting us on trial?”
But our son didn’t smile.
Sarah turned away to hide her tears, and suddenly our granddaughter said something that made the ground seem to disappear beneath my feet.
“Grandma, do you know where we were living while you were on vacation?”
