The following week, I started working at a small neighborhood store. George began doing minor repairs for neighbors.
We sold the jewelry we’d bought during our vacation, an expensive watch, and several old belongings.
In the first month, we managed to repay Daniel $1,200.
He accepted the money without even smiling.
The second month, we transferred another $1,500.
By the third month, George suggested selling his beloved car.
“But you love that car,” I said.
He remained silent for a long moment.
“I love my son more. I just realized far too late what I’ve done to him.”
After that conversation, my husband never complained about our little apartment again.
Six months later, we’d repaid most of the money.
Daniel called occasionally, and Sarah sometimes brought the grandchildren to visit, but our former closeness was gone.
One Sunday, George said he wanted to speak to our son personally.
When Daniel opened the door, my husband didn’t try to justify himself.
