My heart began pounding.
“Emily, did something happen during your vacation?”
She nodded slowly.
Then she whispered something that made my entire body go cold.
“Mom… Dad is the reason I’m pregnant.”
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
“No, sweetheart. There must be some misunderstanding.”
Emily pulled away from me.
“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.”
The disappointment in her voice hurt more than anything.
I immediately held her hands.
“No, Emily. I’m listening. I believe you. Please tell me what happened.”
Through tears, my daughter explained that during their vacation, Daniel had violated her trust and assaulted her.
He had threatened her into silence afterward, warning that nobody would believe her and that she would destroy our family if she spoke.
I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath my feet.
The man I had slept beside for nineteen years. The man who attended every school concert, every birthday celebration, every family holiday.
