I bought a beautiful red dress I’d been afraid to wear for years.
Most importantly, I stopped hiding my body.
Over the following months, Robert worked to rebuild my trust. He didn’t demand forgiveness. He began changing his actions.
Our children gradually welcomed Emily into their lives as their little sister.
A year later, Robert suggested another beach vacation.
I smiled.
“On one condition.”
“Anything.”
“I’m wearing my brightest swimsuit. And if people stare at my body, you won’t be embarrassed.”
He held my hand.
“Mary, I want the whole world to see the wonderful woman beside me.”
I smiled, but answered:
“I don’t need to be beautiful only in your eyes anymore. I want to feel beautiful for myself.”
Today, I’m sixty-two.
My weight has barely changed.
But my life has changed completely.
Robert and I are still rebuilding our relationship. I’ve given him a chance to earn my trust, but my happiness no longer depends on his approval.
